METASONIX R-60

SELF TUNING MIDI/CV INTERFACE

Unlike all the other MIDI/CV converters on the market, the R-60 tunes and scales itself. Plug the CV output into the CV input of your VCO, and plug the VCO output (square or pulse waves are best) into the audio input of the R-60. Push the LEARN button. That's all. It automatically sets itself up to control that VCO over the maximum possible range, in perfect equal tempering. The R-60 doesn't care what the CV response of the VCO is - exponential, Hz/V, whatever - it will try to tune it to equal tempering anyway.

The R-60 is designed for controlling Metasonix vacuum tube VCOs, specifically the R-54. It works on any solid-state VCO. It couldn't be easier to use. And it's only an 8HP Euro module.

Functions: MIDI panic, note on, note off, sustain pedal(suppresses note off), pitch bend, modulation.
Pitch-bend and modulation settings can be redefined with CC messages: CC86 sets the pitch bend range (4 ranges),
Modulation wheel sets the depth of the internal LFO, CC77 also sets depth of LFO (per midi spec), CC76 adjusts the LFO rate from ~10 seconds to ~30 Hz, and CC85 sets the LFO type (4 types: saw, square, triangle and sharks tooth).

The R-60 is monophonic, and has a 10-note buffer memory. Gate output responds to sustain on/off MIDI commands. Retriggering allows trill effects. During learn mode, any MIDI command sent to the R-60 will cause it to receive and follow subsequent commands sent on that channel only - thus obviating the annoyance of MIDI-channel setting switches or menus. Retuning operation is indicated by an LED that blinks to show tuning is underway, and an error blink pattern is shown if retuning is unsuccessful. All settings, including the current CV tuning table, are stored in non-volatile flash memory. The R-60 may be reset by holding the learn button down during power-up -- this erases the stored tuning table and all other stored parameters. Tuning time depends on the VCO used, and can range from 10 seconds to more than 2 minutes. The R-60 tries to tune over the 0-4 volt CV range, starting at C1 (33 Hz) if the VCO will produce that pitch. Accuracy and stability of the tuning table depend on the VCO waveform fed to the R-60. A square or pulse waveform of at least 1v p-p are recommended. (Note: +5v plus +-12v power supplies are required---they must be as clean and stable as possible.)

The Metasonix R-60 is intended for use in any "Eurorack" standard modular synthesizer system. It is 8HP (40.6mm) wide and fits in any Doepfer(tm), Analogue Systems(tm), or other compatible cabinet. It is powered entirely from the cabinet's internal +-12v and +5v dc power supplies, using Doepfer compatible 16-pin power connectors. The circuits protrude behind the panel less than 25mm (1 inch). Audio input and CV output are 100% compatible with other synthesizer modules. Each R-module is fully protected against reverse supply voltage, overvoltage, undervoltage, or incorrect hookup to external equipment. As with all our products, the R series is totally handcrafted in Northern California, USA.
